Eggschange Auctions was developed by me (Brendon Rutter) and my wife Melissa.
In January of 2008 we made the move with our 4 children from the Perth Eastern suburb of Caversham, to the beautiful and tranquil town of Northam, which is located in the Avon Valley about 1 hrs drive east of Perth, in the W.A Wheatbelt Region.
Now that we had moved from the fast flowing life in the city, to the quiet peaceful lifestyle of living in the country, we decided to purchase some day old chicks as an Easter present for our 4 children, unfortunately all 4 had grown into very beautiful, but very noisy roosters, which was a big 'NO' in the part of towm we lived in at the time.
So back to the farm they went, and we brought home 4 bantam pullets, and also some how managed to pickup a young mallard drake while we were there (you know how it is), from that moment on we were hooked. The kids were so excited when we collected our very first egg, and the young Mallard drake (whom we called Crackers) very quickly became inseperable from our oldest son.
With a family of 6 4 hens just didn't provide enough eggs, so of we went to the farm to get another 2 hens, we came home with 4 more hens, and another duck (we just couldn't resist), and from there our collection grew.
For our oldest son's 9th birthday I decided to build him an incubator out of an old bar freezer we had, it worked brilliantly ince completed and we tested it, so we then got hold of some fertile eggs, every day the kids would turn the eggs, every morning they would leap out of bed in anticipation and excitement of our first hatch, finally there patience was paying of, on day 20 of the incubation, we had our very first chick hatch, the kids were excited, that afternoon, when we opened the door (a viewing window came with stage 2) they discovered a further 5 chicks had hatched, so we now had 6 chicks out of eight eggs, so we were wrapped.
Early 2009 we moved to a 5 acre property just outside of town, this is were our passion really took off, we went from a small flock of x breed chickens ,to the many breeds that we own today.
The next obvious step for us was to enter into poultry exhibitions, as this is our first year of showing we are quite excited and anxious, but it's all in the name of fun, and as long as we enjoy ourselves, just being there is enough.
In June 2009 we came up with the idea for Eggschange Auctions, and it we officially launched in August, and we hope that the site will grow and expand as more people hear about us, and we hope that our main focus of having Fun and enjoying this fantastic hobby will be strengthened by the support of the Eggschange Auctions Community.
We know how difficult it is to track down that special or rare breed, and with this is mind, we developed Eggschange Auctions, to make it easier to find top quality breeders, and put you intouch with other enthusiasts from around Australia
We want to see your hard work & strict breeding programs, acknowledged so if you're a breeder of a rare or hard to find breed, we want to see you obtaining the best possible price for your birds!
Eggschange Auctions will hopefully become the first point of call for all poultry enthusiasts from across the country, we hope to provide a safe & enjoyable community for people of all walks of life to share & enjoy this wonderful hobby.
We hope to encourage more people to keep & breed Pure Breed Poultry, and hopefully get them into their local exhibitions aswell, we have noticed a trend of younger children taking an interest in the hobby & we couldn't be more excited for them, children of today are the exhibitors of tommorrow.
